When you’re active you look physically healthier, which gives you a younger appearance. Also if you’re active and healthy you’re most likely not over weight. You’ve heard about the devastating effects that weight has on your joints. Exercising is an ideal way to reduce joint pain and possibly prevent hip surgery all together. Here are a few exercises to keep you out of the doctor’s office.

1) Hip Extensions to Prevent Hip Surgery
This exercises is relatively pain free. Start by standing up straight with a chair in front of you. Grab the backrest of the chair and lean forward 45 degrees while keeping your legs straight.
Next, keep one leg straight and move the other leg back away from you while keeping the leg straight that’s moving. Repeat this for both legs and aim for 3 sets of 8-10 repetitions per leg.
2) Squat to Prevent Hips Surgery
I’m sure we have all heard what a squat is. We’re all familiar with the movements of a squat. For many people suffering hip pain or arthritis in the hip, this may be painful, but it’s effective. You can also do this exercise with or without weights.
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Hold a five to ten pound dumbbell in each hand at your side. Your palms should be facing forward. Keep your back slightly arched while bending your knees about 10 inches. If you can bend more than 10 inches, great! Take a brief pause and then slowly rise back into the standing-straight position.
Try to aim for 10-12 repetitions of this exercise. Do not feel like you have to use a lot of weight. To get started you don’t need any weight at all.
3) Leg Press to Prevent Hip Surgery
The leg press may not be an exercise that you can do at home since it requires a leg press machine. However, if you have a pass to your local gym then you’re set!
Sit down in the leg machine and put your feet on the platform in front of you. At this point you should be in a chair with your back almost touching the ground, your legs bent and your feet pointed in an upward position.
Slightly press forward on the platform and release the safety bars. At this point you will want to extend your legs as far as possible. (note: Don’t lock your knees) The weight will naturally bring the platform back down and you have just completed one repetition. Repeat about 8-10 times for three sets.
This exercise is important if you really want to avoid hip surgery because it builds up the muscles around the hip joint. Building these muscles is crucial for protecting the joint and preventing injury.
4) Aerobic Activities to Prevent Hip Surgery
Not every exercise requires a gym pass, a weight or an object. Some exercises are extremely effective with just simple movements
If you live in a house with multiple floors or a basement you can always climb steps to get a good hip exercise. Try going up and down the steps 3-5 times or until you feel tired. If you don’t want to turn steps into an exercise just use the steps whenever practical and avoid escalators and elevators.
You can also try a simple walking exercise. The key is to walk fast enough so that your heart rate is up, but slow enough so you aren’t sprinting or running.
