Stem Cell Therapy to Clinical Trials for Knees

You would never spend money on a car until you knew it started and ran without problems. Similarly, you wouldn’t take over the counter medicine if you were told it has never been tested on humans. Some purchases in life require testing and proof before you make a purchase

When it comes to stem cell therapy there is no difference. People want to know that the procedure it tested and proven before they make the purchase. Potential patients want to know that the process is safe. Not to mention, people want to know that they’re getting what they’re paying for. After all, Stem cell therapy is not covered by insurance at this time and the procedure doesn’t come with a small price tag.

Thankfully the Mayo Clinic has conducted the world’s first prospective, blinded and placebo-controlled clinical study to test the benefits of using stem cells to reduce arthritic pain and disability in the knees.

Mayo Clinic

What is the Mayo Clinic and is their study valid?

According to the Mayo Clinic’s Website, the “Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit organization committed to clinical practice, education, and research, providing expert, whole-person care to everyone who needs healing.”

Not to mention the Mayo Clinic has won tons of awards such as:

It’s safe to say that they are good on their word and their clinical study is legitimate.

According to the video above, the Mayo Clinic was focused on the effects of stem cells to treat knee pain from symptoms of osteoarthritis. They conducted this study alongside FDA monitoring to determine if the treatment was SAFE and VIABLE to perform on patients who are suffering from knee arthritis.

Overall they found a viable product (stem cells), which can be used to inject into a patient’s knees as an outpatient procedure.

This is very important because it forms the basis for their future clinical trials as they try to regrow cartilage for knees that have osteoarthritis for stem cells.

The study was conducted as a very early way to assess safety and feasibility. This means overall the Mayo Clinic was only performing the study to make sure it’s even a treatment worth spending their time on. Overall they concluded that the procedure was safe AND effective in the knees.

Stem cells are the building blocks of many types of adult human tissues. These cells have the ability to go on and form into bones, ligaments, and cartilage. These are all things that make up the joints in our bodies. The significance is that this is the VERY first clinical study on a large group that is randomized and placebo controlled. This means that all of the patients did not know if they were receiving an injection of stem cells into the problematic areas.

Stem cells have never been studied in this rigorous of a scientific fashion and this may open up a lot of doors and open up a lot of minds in the stem cell community.
