What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. In your foot, there is a long, flat band of tissue called the plantar fascia. This ligament connects the heel bone to the arches of your foot.
While this ligament can endure a lot of stress, overuse and injury can still irritate the ligament.
Once this ligament gets irritated it’s only a matter of time before the plantar fascia becomes weak, swollen and inflamed. When swelling occurs then heel pain and pains on the bottom of your foot are soon to follow.
Plantar fasciitis is not as common in younger people. Most patients suffering from this condition are middle-aged. However, younger people who are on their feet a lot can experience this painful condition.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is simply caused by straining the ligament. When you overuse the ligament then you cause tiny tears in the ligament. These tiny tears are what lead to pain and swelling.
What causes tears in the plantar fascia?
- Being overweight
- Running too much when learning to jog
- Standing on your feet too long
- Running on hard surfaces
- Wearing shoes that are too big
- Wearing shoes that are too small
- Shoes that are worn out
- Having high arches or flat feet
With that being said, there are a number of ways to prevent plantar fasciitis which include:
- Losing weight
- Wearing correctly sized shoes
- Stretching your Achilles
- Stretch your calf muscles
- Jogging on softer surfaces
- Balancing being on and off your feet for periods of time
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
You may be thinking that you broke a bone in your foot or you are experiencing some sort of sprain. It’s important to know the symptoms of plantar fasciitis first or you could end up making your condition worse.
When most people have plantar fasciitis they experience excruciating pain in their heel. You will take a step and your body may even have a natural reaction to prevent yourself from putting weight on your heel. Also, the pain is not subtle. You’ll know when you have plantar fasciitis.
You may notice stiffness first thing in the morning and then less pain as the day progresses. However, the pain may get worse if you are required to put large amounts of time on your feet.
If you do have plantar fasciitis you’ll notice that the pain subsides once you take the pressure and weight off of the affected foot.
The pain lasts for weeks and besides stretches and temporary pain medication, there isn’t much you can do.
