Like other joints in the body, we realize that wrist pain is an extremely common problem that many people face.
What Causes Wrist Pain?
The wrist is a complicated and complex series of small bones (27 to be in-fact). Muscles and tendons hold all of these small bones together. Only a small amount of cartilage prevents these bones from rubbing together, which would cause pain and inflammation. This means that the opportunity for injury and pain is relatively high.
Most of the injuries are caused by:
- Injury do to great force, especially with older age
- Ligament inflammation.
Overusing the Wrist
Overusing the wrist may be the main cause of wrist pain for our patients. Just like overusing your other joints such as the knees and ankles, degeneration can take place with years of overuse. However, just like the elbow, degeneration of the joint doesn’t come from years of weight adding stress to the area.
Consider a joint such as the hip. The hip may be the largest joint in the body and years of putting weight on this joint has lead to degeneration and perhaps arthritis.
The wrist doesn’t experience this stress. There is no weight that is ever put upon this joint. However, this doesn’t mean that the wrist is exempt from osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a group of mechanical abnormalities resulting in joint destruction, which can occur in the wrist. These abnormalities include degeneration of cartilage.
When you wear away the cartilage in your wrist you experience chronic pain. While common degeneration isn’t as common in the wrist it’s still possible.
More than likely you have a painful condition to the tendons in the wrist, which is causing pain.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome take place when the median nerve, which passes into the hand, is compressed. This nerve is located on the palm side of your hand and provides sensation to various parts of your hand. The actual condition is caused from swelling from the inside of your wrist.
Common causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Include:
- Repetitive motion
- Thyroid dysfunction
- High Blood pressure
- Playing the Piano
- Using power tools
If you have carpal tunnel you’ll notice numbness, tingling and pain in your thumb and first three fingers of your hand. Pain may cause a burning sensation that travels up your arm and your hand will become weak.
