What Causes Shoulder Pain
There are many reasons why a person might experience shoulder pain. However, we’ll focus on the most common reasons that we see:
Overusing the Shoulder
For many people, the main cause of shoulder pain comes from years of overuse. What does this mean?
Throughout your life, you are using your shoulder daily. From brushing our teeth, cutting the grass and even driving. All of these tasks require the use of your shoulder. While you may not realize it now, but even small tasks put stress on your shoulders.
Over the course of your lifetime of putting stress on your shoulder, you have slowly been wearing away the shoulder joint, specifically the cartilage and tendons in the joint.
Cartilage in the shoulder is precious. It’s not like skin and other parts of the body that heal. Once you wear away the cartilage in your shoulder it’s gone for good!
Over the years of using your shoulder for daily tasks, you may have been slowly wearing away at this cartilage. Cartilage is the rubbery substance that lives in the shoulder that acts as a cushion in the joint. Without this cushion, your bones rub together and inflammation and pain may occur.
Now you’re in your later years and you’re beginning to show signs of arthritis.
Injuring the Shoulder
The shoulder is a very injury prone joint. Unlike the ankle or the wrist, the shoulder seems to be an area that endures a lot of injuries.
In many situations, we see that athletes seem to injure their shoulder from excessive and repetitive motion. Think of a baseball pitcher. After thousands of pitches, throwing the baseball as fast as you can, eventually, your shoulder is going to pay the price.
Also, since the shoulder consists of a lot of tendons there are a lot of injuries based around wearing out the tendons.
Think about the soles on your shoes. The more you wear your shoes, the more your soles wear out. Eventually, the soles crack and break. Wearing out your tendons and cartilage works the same way and injury may occur.
Finally, injury takes place when there is a sudden excessive force to the shoulder or overstretching the joint. For example, if an athlete get’s hits in the shoulder during a tackle there’s a chance an injury can occur.
Some common shoulder injuries include:
- Tendon Tears
