What is the Ulnar Collateral Ligament
The ulnar collateral ligament, or UCL, is a triangular band that is found near the elbow. This area is a common place where a number of athletes have suffered career-ending injuries. Most recently Andrew Heaney, the pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, suffered from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left arm. It was an injury that ended his season in 2015. Typical surgery would be the answer for such an injury, which would have left the pitcher off the field for at least 15 months. But, instead of agreeing to the surgery he opted for stem cell therapy instead.
The ulnar collateral ligament can be injured with repetitive stress damage to the inside of the elbow. It helps in supporting and stabilizing the arm when in motion. The repetitive trauma or stress, such as throwing a pitch, for an extended amount of time, causes the ulnar collateral ligament to stretch. The first symptoms of a damaged UCL are pain in the arm, soreness, swelling, numbness or tingling, and an instability feeling at the elbow.
