This article features Julie Cerrone, a yoga and wellness instructor, who was suffering from a rare condition that kept her from following her dreams and holding her back from helping her clients.
When you typically think of a Yoga instructor and wellness professional you don’t normally think of someone on crutches. However, this was the case for Julie Cerrone. She was suffering from extreme knee pain and she was only 30 years old at the time. Instead of throwing in the towel and opting for a career where she could manage her knee pain, she desperately tried to find a solution to her problem.
After consultations exams and tests with over a dozen doctors, she finally learned that she had avascular necrosis in her femur bone and specifically in her knee.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Avascular necrosis is the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply. Also called osteonecrosis, avascular necrosis can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and the bone’s eventual collapse.
The blood flow to a section of bone can be interrupted if the bone is fractured or the joint becomes dislocated. Avascular necrosis is also associated with long-term use of high-dose steroid medications and excessive alcohol intake.”
Although anyone can be affected by this condition, it’s more common in people between the ages of 30-60. This makes long-term consequences significant.
In a nutshell, if she didn’t find a treatment FAST she would be on crutches for the next 10 years or until her knee collapsed.
Julie didn’t get discouraged and so she reached out to friends and family on social media, along with intensive research online. She began to learn about a regenerative treatment called stem cell therapy and she became curious.
Can Stem Cell Therapy Help?
Julie found that there was a significant amount of people being treated with stem cells for orthopedic conditions such as:
Still skeptical, she decided to undergo stem cell therapy for her knee. After all, her pain has reached a point where it literally took her an hour to go from her bedroom to her car. She didn’t have too much to lose.
The injection of Stem Cells into her knee took several months to work, but within three months she was off of pain medications. Around the six month mark, 40% of the bone had regrown and she was finally able to ditch the crutches! Finally, by March of 2016, 60% of her bone had grown back and she is now back to living her life, pain-free.
Now Julie attends hearings where she tells her story to any organizations who are working against the use of stem cells. She knows that without this amazing treatment she would be on a downward spiral.
